Do you feel the familiar twinge of sadness as you take down the tinsel and shove everything back up in the loft? Me too! But January blues don’t have to own your first month of the New Year. Here are some tips on how to stave off winter woes and turn them into a jet pack full of motivation for 2017!
1. Have a clean out-
You can’t think clearly in a pit of clutter. Have a physical sort out of your house, workspace and laptop to ensure you have only the essentials and no unnecessary junk to start 2017 off with a blank slate.
2. Give some stuff away-
If you are like me and you get very attached to things, simply throwing away items that aren’t broken or out of date can be very difficult. So re-gifting them or donating them to charity shops can be a great solution, you get to declutter, whilst knowing that someone else is benefiting from your unwanted items, (plus you support a charity at the same time, which always feels good!)
3. Sell things on Ebay-
Got something too expensive to just give away? Or perhaps you got a double present this Christmas? Listing items on Ebay is a very simple way to make a bit of extra cash after an expensive Christmas and it has the added bonus of helping you clean out for the New Year.
4. Book some treats to look forward to-
The long winter months can be dark and dreary with little to look forward to until spring. So plan some treats and activities you can look forward to in the coming months. Chocolate Fondue with friends, theatre trips or even a short winter break, it doesn’t have to be expensive, as long as you know you will enjoy it, it will be your light at the end of the January tunnel!
5. Brighten up your home-
It can be hard to stay positive when your surroundings are nothing but beige and grey. Brighten up your home or work space with a potted plant like a hyacinth, (that also smell incredible by the way,) or get crafty and add some art work or inspirational photography to your walls. A pretty abode makes for a productive person!
6. Get a motivational playlist-
Is there really any better motivation than a great song that picks you up from the gloom and has you tapping your feet under your desk and humming it throughout the day? Group together your favourite positive songs and make a playlist on your phone or Youtube that you can dive into anytime you need a pick-me-up. (If you need help, our motivational playlist is available on our Youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPmIxKyHUoEy3abvefgyEEqKeyglJXRLw )
7. Make time for quality time with friends-
The Beatles really knew their stuff; ‘I get by with a little help from my friends,’ and what problem doesn’t feel a little smaller after a good laugh with good friends? That’s what friends are for so don’t shut them out just because it’s cold and rainy outside and you can’t be bothered to walk to the coffee shop. Make time to see people in January as you’re likely to be calmer after the Christmas madness and can relax with a good catch up and cuppa with a best friend.
8. Plan out your new calendar-
Planning out your coming dates and events on a calendar or in a diary isn’t just good organisation but will also help you go into 2017 with a positive outlook. You’ll be able to prepare in advance for everything coming up as well as noticing that you have an entire year to do what you want to achieve this year.
9. Try out some new recipes-
Even if you’re not a foodie or domestic God/dess, everyone appreciates a really great meal. And thanks to Pinterest we have a library of new dinner ideas with easy instructions of how to make it ourselves. Trying out a new dish at a restaurant or better yet, making it yourself will add a bit of spice to the cold winter months and shake up the monotonous.
10. Take a class in something you’ve always wanted to learn-
Nothing motivates like surprising yourself with what you can achieve. Start off this year by learning something you’ve always wanted to be able to do; join that rock climbing club, take a language class, learn the guitar, whatever it is, as long as it’s something that will better yourself and make you happy. Taking on the challenge of something you’ve always wanted to learn but always put off will push your limits and completely change your own opinion of yourself. If you can do this, there’s little you can’t tackle!
