We are currently in a golden age of original TV that stirs up real life conversations and has an impact on our culture. A huge part of a shows influence comes from having an epic wardrobe and style department who go out of their way to make a totally immersive world, down to every ring, every shoe and every fake eye lash. Here at 12 shows that are killing it in style right now:
Pretty Little Liars –
This show has more cute dresses than it has evil twins, (and it has a lot of them!) Each one of the liars has an individual style and at least 5 knock out looks every season. Now if they could just stop lying to everyone, then they might get to keep a bit of blood off of those nice clothes!
The long anticipated screen adaption of Natsy Gal’s creator Sophia Amoruso’s best seller, this Netflix show was bound to host some incredible, vintage looks. But boy does it deliver! From the metallic motor bike jacket to the chunky platform boots, the clothes are the heart of the show that also has some great insights to starting a business and finding your own way.
Following the life, loves and losses of young Queen Mary I as she is thrown into the world of court politics and extravagance, this show was bound to have a few dresses to drool over. But Reign pulls a ‘Knight’s Tale trick’ by having modern day fashion leak into the Tudor era show to suggest the fashion forward style of the French court and that of Mary and her teenaged ladies. Everything from Alexander Mcqueen, Basil Soda Couture, Free People, even Topshop have made an appearance!
Gossip Girl –
Ten years ago, when thinking of killer TV fashion, you may have though Sex in the City, but that crown was stolen and worn with heavy accessories by the cast of Gossip Girl. This was the show millennials dressed by, from the sexy private school blazer and skirt combo to the sweeping prom dresses and so very many Blair headbands! The Vanderwoodsen and Waldorf influence can still be seen in fashion now.
The 100 –
Not a typical fashion choice, this Scifi drama is set in the future after a group of space-born teens return to an empty earth hundreds of years after it was abandoned by the human race. You wouldn’t expect to see cutting edge style in this environment, even amongst a ridiculously attractive gang of survivors, but may I present the jackets of the grounders, the combat boots of the teens and the hair stylings of Raven and Octavia. If this is the future of fashion, we like it!
True Blood –
What’s hotter than the steamy scenes between the vampire/ werewolf/ fairy cast on True Blood? Well the adorable yet seductive sun dresses of Sookie Stackhouse for one. Sure, pretty much everything these characters wear will inevitably get covered in blood but the few seconds before they do, they look damn good. It’s also a fantastic show for diversity and demonstrates the unique style of each character in a distinct and dramatic fashion.
Mad Men –
It’s a man’s world in marketing in the 1950’s but that doesn’t stop this show highlighting some extraordinary women and the clothes that give them the confidence to climb the corporate ladder. We’re particular fans of the shapely figure and trademark red hair of Joan, (Christina Hendricks,) and the colourful and sexy work attire she wears.
The Tudors –
This was the show that injected sex appeal back into the history dramas and launched the brilliant Natalie Dormer onto our screens and into our dreams! Whilst the show takes a fair few liberties with history, the period dress is pretty much on point with everything from corsets to crowns being stunningly beautiful. There’s also plenty of accessories, worn by the men and women that will have you searching the thrift stores for costume brooches and signet rings.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer –
Buffy is girl power turned up to one hundred, in platform boots and with serious martial arts cred. Sure it can be argued that it’s pretty dated nowadays, but we say that the confidence that Buffy and others wear with each outfit is timeless and we doubt it will be long before a lot of those looks come back around.
Game of Thrones –
What we wouldn’t give to live in Westeros! OK, sure, it’s full of murder, backstabbing, war and an uncomfortable level of incest, but have you seen the clothes? Damn! We would love to walk down the street in a gorgeous, billowing dress with metal detail and tall, elaborate hair and not have someone here stop us and ask why we are wearing curtains!
They are violent, ruthless and destructive, but damn don’t they have great hair? Whilst the costumes on Vikings are beautiful and accurate, we love this show more for the hair and makeup styling, particularly that of leading ladies Lagertha and Queen Aslaug. With warrior braids and coal black eye makeup, each woman looks like she could and would kick the crap outta any dude!
Mr Selfridge –
This show will make you want to shop… a lot! Velvet, feather bowers and really big hats are back in a big way as we get a look at the revolutionary retail industry back in the early 1900. This is a dramatized retelling of the real mastermind behind London’s famous department store Selfridges. Jewel coloured leather gloves, sweeping ball gowns and exotic, Parisian print silk scarves are abundant in this charming little look back at recent history.
